World IP Day and the Congressional Inventions Caucus

Statement by Rep. Kevin Kiley of California
Tuesday, May 13, 2025

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to commemorate World Intellectual Property Day and the launch of the Congressional Inventions Caucus.

This newly formed bipartisan caucus will promote education, collaboration, and legislative action on intellectual property issues in Congress. I would like to thank Rep. Deborah Ross for co-leading this effort with me in the House, as well as Senators Steve Daines and Chris Coons in the Senate.

Copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets are essential to America’s innovation economy. They are the foundation of our industrial strength, standard of living, and both our economic and national security.

Intellectual property-intensive industries account for 44 percent of U.S. jobs and provide better pay and benefits than jobs that make little or no use of IP. These industries drive the development of new medicines, advanced computing, and cutting-edge microchips. Intellectual property is also the backbone of our cultural exports—movies, music, publishing, and more.

IP-driven industries produce nearly 80 percent of U.S. commodity exports. The United States remains the world’s top intellectual property exporter, with IP exports totaling $140 billion in 2024 and contributing to a significant trade surplus.

By supporting strong intellectual property protections, we ensure that the United States continues to lead the world in innovation and creativity. The Congressional Inventions Caucus is committed to advancing that goal.
